Thanks to the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions (FACT) Act of 2003, consumers now have a new tool to obtain their credit report. The FACT Act guarantees every consumer the right to one free credit report annually from each of the three main credit bureaus. There are a number of look alike sources for getting a free credit report, but most have strings attached, such as expensive credit monitoring and alert services.
There is only one source for the free credit reports mandated by Congress. This is the information for the service:
Website: www.annualcreditreport.com
Telephone: (877) 322-8228
Mail:
Annual Credit Report Request Service
PO Box 105281
Atlanta, GA 30348-5281
For all mail requests, you will need to send in the completed request form.
The free credit report does not include a credit score. Each credit bureau charges an additional fee for the score. Due to the frequency of price changes, we cannot accurately list them here. Consumers should also understand that the consumer credit score products marketed by the credit bureaus are not the same credit score that lenders see (See Consumer Credit Scores Are Not Actual Credit Scores).
Additionally, we have recently benefitted from a partnership with another nonprofit charity that allows for you to receive free credit reports and scores if you believe that you might be interested in buying a home in the next 3 years.
